{"id":2662,"date":"2016-12-03T10:25:58","date_gmt":"2016-12-03T10:25:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jamiebrightmore.com\/?p=2662"},"modified":"2017-11-29T11:10:00","modified_gmt":"2017-11-29T11:10:00","slug":"drone-assist-app-nats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamiebrightmore.com\/aerial-photography\/drone-assist-app-nats\/","title":{"rendered":"Drone Assist App from NATS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new app has been released to help improve drone safety in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Developed by the <strong>UK Aeronautical Service<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nats.aero\">NATS<\/a>, the app integrates the excellent data services from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altitudeangel.com\">Altitude Angel<\/a> providing a very detailed overview of potential ground and air hazards.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been testing the <strong>iOS<\/strong> version and would like to share some details as I think all drone pilots\u00a0should download\u00a0this app and use it prior to flying as well as at your chosen location. Drone Assist is designed to help everyone abide by the rules, identify areas of controlled and restricted airspace, therefore helping them to enjoy flying whilst ensuring their safety and the safety of other airspace users.&#8221;<\/em> \u2013\u00a0<strong>Phil Binks<\/strong>, NATS drone lead<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>How it works<\/h2>\n<p>Firstly, the app requires that you set up an account. If you already have an account with Altitude Angel you can login straight away with those credentials.<\/p>\n<p>The app\u2019s core functionality is quite simply a map just like the regular Apple \/ Google Maps apps respectively. How it differs is by\u00a0layering highly relevant data for\u00a0drone users, such as; <em>Airports<\/em>, <em>Danger Areas<\/em>, <em>Restricted Zones<\/em>, <em>Ground Hazards<\/em>, and any active NOTAMS (<em>Notice to Airmen<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The app\u2019s user interface is presented in a clear way that should\u00a0make it obvious to anyone where you should <em>not<\/em> be flying. It&#8217;s worth fully familiarising yourself with the various data on offer, which I\u2019ll go into a bit more detail on now.<\/p>\n<h2>Map Detail<\/h2>\n<p>At a zoomed-out level you can get a good idea about large zones which may be either fully restricted, airports for example, or that may require extra caution, such as active NOTAMS which may reveal special events, such as scheduled Hot Air Balloon flights.<\/p>\n<p>Zooming-in begins to reveal ground level objects, areas, and specific locations for consideration. For example it will display recognisable icons to show you sensitive locations such as schools and areas where large public gatherings may take place. All\u00a0of which should give pause for thought before deciding to fly a drone nearby. All you need to do is tap &#8216;Fly Now\u2019, add a flight <em>Title<\/em> and optional <em>Description<\/em>, then select if it\u2019s a <em>Recreational<\/em> or <em>Commercial<\/em> flight. Note: no personal details will be shared.<\/p>\n<p>Your reported info and location will be used to create a temporary zone on the map so others can see that there are drone activities happening in that location. This is a valuable feature and I hope people begin to use it. Situational awareness is a key factor in safe flying and knowing there may be other drones flying near to you will be incredibly useful.*<\/p>\n<p>*I will be trying this feature out very soon and will report back by updating this article with my thoughts on how this functionality performs.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>The app works extremely well and I urge everyone to use it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/appsto.re\/gb\/xDu6fb.i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download &#8216;<strong>Drone Assist<\/strong>&#8216;
